Samsung on 29th March, 2017 showcased their latest flagship model Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus to the smartphone industry. Both of the new flagship models are actually having old Galaxy S7 Edge specs in new design and packs so called new infinity display and few other gimmicks.
Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus packs same 4GB Ram but new 10nm processor which is just 10% faster from Galaxy S7 Edge. Old 12mp rear and 8mp front camera sensors with dual pixels gimmicks. Dual curved edge display design which the previous Galaxy S7 Edge had. Samsung Galaxy S8 also packs some new gimmicks, UI and added security features like Face Detection, IRIS Scanner as an addition.
Starting with the new screens of 5.8 and 6.2 inches, the two new handsets include Samsung’s upgraded digital assistant Bixby. Bixby is competing in a crowded field that includes Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
The most interesting feature of the new Samsung Galaxy S8 is what Samsung called an Infinity display. Which expanded glass screen that covers the entire front of the device and appears to curve seamlessly around its edges. Samsung Galaxy S8 also now comes with 64GB base memory and can support expandable Micro SD card upto 256GB of storage.
Home button has been replaced with a pressure-sensitive section embedded under the screen just like Apple’s 3d Touch. Both phones are more water resistant and allow bio metric authentication with fingerprint and iris scanners. Also face detection security is added which was used in Samsung Galaxy S1 years ago by Samsung Mobile.
Bixby the new Siri:
Bixby virtual assistant marks a further step into services for the world’s biggest smartphone vendor. Which allow users to shop, search for images and get details about nearby places with image recognition technology. Samsung’s services chief Sriram Thodla said Bixby would allow for better navigation of applications on the phone.
“We’ve built intelligence into the camera,” he said.
“If you see something you want to buy, just point the camera at it and Bixby will find it from one of our partners.”
Samsung Galaxy S8 digital assistant will also enhance the phone’s capabilities as a remote control for connected home devices, Thodla said. Which is a copy of Apple Home Kit feature. The South Korean electronics last year also bought Viv, an artificial intelligence startup with co-founders who were part of the team that built Siri, which Apple bought some seven years ago.
Availability and Pricing:
As company’s top-end handsets, the Samsung Galaxy S8 models will challenge the latest upcoming Apple iPhone 8 or 7s. The new phones will be available starting April 21, Samsung said. In the US market, they will be sold through major carriers and retailers, with unlocked devices priced starting from $725.
Launch after the Galaxy Note 7 recall:
The Samsung Galaxy S8 release comes right after Samsung was forced to recall its Note 7 phones for catching fire due to overheating batteries. The recall costed the South Korean company billions of dollars in lost profit and hammered its global reputation and credibility.
Its vice-chairman Lee Jae-Yong, heir to the parent Samsung group, has been arrested and indicted for bribery, along with four other senior executives, in connection with a graft scandal that saw ex-president Park Geun-Hye impeached. Samsung apologized to consumers for the recall and was forced to postpone the S8 launch. Its investigation blamed the problems on faulty batteries.
What Samsung did after Galaxy Note 7 recall:
The firm later embarked on a campaign to restore its battered reputation, placing full-page advertisements in US newspapers that admitted it “fell short” on its promises. The Korean tech giant says it has also come up with elaborate step-by-step safety verification procedures for future products to prevent similar disasters.
As a good will gesture Samsung will be including its Gear virtual reality headset to customers pre-ordering the handsets. Samsung also introduced its Dex adapter which allows the smartphones to be transformed into desktop computers. Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research was impressed by the new devices but also noted they would be priced higher than competitors from Apple and others.
Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus looks similar to Galaxy S7 Edge in terms of dual curved display design. But also to mention that newer will have something to offer in a better way. No doubt Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge was a hit from Samsung Mobile and still selling like hot cakes. Let’s see how far Samsung Mobile can go with their latest flagship models. However company is already in a great loss with Galaxy Note 7 recall. This can also stop some buyers to get their interest and trust back in Galaxy brand immediately.
